Letterboxd

This is not a movie review, but an announcement. I have officially joined the movie review/social media/popular cinephile site, Letterboxd.

For the longest time, I’ve used a Google doc to keep track of my favorite films, least favorite films, and films I want to watch next. I’m not sure why, but in recent weeks I decided it was time to make the switch. It was a lot of fun going through lists and trying to remember every movie I had ever seen. And while I probably forgot some, I’m comfortable enough now with how many I’ve logged on the app to let people know where to find me. It’s a (mostly) complete library of everything I’ve seen.

There are three different aspects of Letterboxd I want to discuss. First, reviews. I will not (except in rare cases) be leaving reviews or giving star ratings to films on Letterboxd. If I write a review, it will still be on this blog, where I have the time and space to write whatever I feel. More importantly, I don’t want to have to rate the films I watch, or worry about the number of stars a movie will get while it’s playing. I’ll use the “like” button on the app, but there will be no star ratings from my account. Filmmaking is hard, and while I appreciate the simplicity of a five-star rating system, I can’t bring myself to do it.

Second, I love the ability to make lists. Oh, will I be making lists. Top films of the year, 100 essential movies, favorite comedies. It’s a great way of sorting films and sharing thoughts on what I enjoy. So if you like lists and categories, my Letterboxd account will be of interest to you. Also, I’ve been much better about checking off movies from my “to watchlist” now that I have it on the app. So hopefully I get to expand my film knowledge, too.

Lastly, I want to comment on the famous “Letterboxd four favorites” that sit at the top of each profile. Currently, I have the following films selected: Almost Famous, Toy Story 2, The Princess Bride, and No Country for Old Men. Really, it’s impossible to pick just four, but I like the mix and the look of those four representing my taste. Toy Story 2 is one of my favorite films of all-time, and Almost Famous is my go-to answer when someone asks my favorite, so those will always remain in my four. The other two slots? I will refer you to my list of 100 movies for the possible selections. It could change at any moment

So there you go– I’m on Letterboxd. It’s a great tool for sharing a love of film, and I’m excited to see you there. You can find me @bremis10. Look for the picture of Ron Burgundy.
